About Yanac
Yanac is a small rural locality in the Shire of Hindmarsh, situated in the south of the Mallee region in north-west Victoria, approximately 350 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and 28 kilometres north-west of Nhill. The locality covers a vast 344 square kilometres of semi-arid Mallee country, characterised by low rainfall, infertile sandy-loam soils, and the distinctive multi-stemmed eucalyptus scrub for which the Mallee is named. With a 2021 Census population of 69 residents, Yanac is a very small farming community, with grain growing being the dominant land use across the surrounding plains.
Yanac was established as a local service centre when the railway line from Jeparit reached the area in 1912, and a railway station, grain silos, public hall (built 1921), and general store followed in subsequent years. The railway closed in 1984, and several community facilities — including the school, the Lutheran church, and the Salvation Army hall — closed in the 1990s as population declined. Today, Yanac residents rely on Nhill for services, shopping, and schooling, while the wide open Mallee landscape and strong agricultural traditions continue to define the locality's identity.
Yanac falls under postcode 3418 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lowan (Western Victoria) electorate.
