About Yandanooka
Yandanooka is a small rural town in the Shire of Mingenew in Western Australia's Mid West region, situated approximately 348 kilometres north of Perth and 20 kilometres south-east of Mingenew on the Midlands Road between Mingenew and Three Springs. The townsite was gazetted in 1919 and takes its name from an Aboriginal word believed to mean 'plenty of hilly country in sight', reflecting the undulating landscape of the northern Wheatbelt. With a population of just 30 at the 2021 census and covering 238 square kilometres, Yandanooka is one of the Mid West's most sparsely settled farming localities. The area was first settled by Thomas Whitfield in the 1850s, with a railway siding established when the Midland Railway opened through the area in 1895.
Yandanooka's community hall — a local landmark — is the social centrepiece for a farming district engaged primarily in broadacre wheat and canola cropping on the Mid West's productive soils. Mingenew (20 km north-west) provides the nearest basic services for the district, while Geraldton (approximately 130 kilometres north) is the regional centre for the Mid West with hospitals, schools, major retail and a regional airport. The surrounding landscape of the northern Wheatbelt offers scenic driving through wildflower country, particularly spectacular in spring when Wreath leschenaultia and native everlastings create colourful roadside displays. The area appeals to those engaged in broadacre farming who value the space and community spirit of the Mid West's agricultural heartland.
Yandanooka falls under postcode 6522 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Moore (Agricultural) electorate.
