About Yarloop
Yarloop is a small town in the South West region of Western Australia, located along the South Western Highway approximately 129 kilometres south of Perth and 18 kilometres north of Harvey, within the Shire of Harvey. With a population of around 541 residents across a large 92-square-kilometre locality, Yarloop was historically a significant timber milling centre, with the Millars' timber operations establishing the town from 1894 and shaping its early character. The town gained widespread attention in January 2016 when a devastating bushfire destroyed much of the townsite, damaging or destroying many homes, businesses, and the heritage-listed Yarloop Workshops; rebuilding efforts have since brought new life to the community.
Yarloop is a resilient community rebuilding from the 2016 fire, with a restored town hall and renewed community facilities standing as symbols of the town's determination. The surrounding landscape features fertile agricultural land, jarrah forest remnants, and the Yalup Brook nearby, reflecting the area's pastoral and timber heritage. Residents enjoy a quiet rural lifestyle with easy access to Harvey's shops, schools, and services 18 kilometres to the south, while the Forrest Highway provides convenient links to Bunbury (approximately 60 km) and Perth (approximately 129 km).
Yarloop falls under postcode 6218 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Murray-Wellington (South West) electorate.
