About Yeelanna
Yeelanna is a small rural locality on South Australia's Lower Eyre Peninsula, situated approximately 77 kilometres north of Port Lincoln within the District Council of Lower Eyre Peninsula. The town is positioned on the Tod Highway between Lock and Cummins, and covers a large agricultural area of around 158 square kilometres. With a population of 85 at the 2021 Census, Yeelanna is a tight-knit farming community whose name derives from an Aboriginal word meaning 'local spring', and the township was originally surveyed in 1908 under the name Bellwood before the railway siding name prevailed.
The Yeelanna district is noted for its extremely fertile farming land, with nearly all properties in continuous cropping — primarily cereal grains — reflecting the Eyre Peninsula's reputation as one of Australia's most productive broadacre farming regions. The town retains a small community presence with a hall, post office, a Uniting Church, CFS fire brigade, grain silos, and the local Bellwood Museum preserving the district's pioneering history. The Eyre Peninsula Railway connected Yeelanna in 1909 and transported grain to Port Lincoln for export until 2018, after which road transport by grain trucks has taken over. Residents travel to Cummins or Port Lincoln for broader services and amenities.
Yeelanna falls under postcode 5632 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Flinders electorate.
