About Yerranderie
Yerranderie is a historic ghost town located in the rugged wilderness near Kanangra-Boyd National Park in New South Wales, within Wollondilly Shire. Once a thriving silver mining settlement of around 2,000 people in the early twentieth century, the town's fortunes collapsed when silver prices fell and the industry shuttered in 1927. The creation of Warragamba Dam and Lake Burragorang in 1959 further isolated the site by cutting off its direct road access from Sydney.
Today, Yerranderie attracts adventurous visitors and history enthusiasts who make the challenging journey by 4WD along the old Colong stock route from Oberon, or fly in via the private airstrip. The area is dotted with abandoned mine shafts, heritage buildings, and mining relics, offering a fascinating window into early twentieth-century rural industry. Country music legend Frank Ifield immortalised the town in song, and the whole precinct is now managed as a private heritage site. The 2021 Census recorded just four residents, making it one of the most sparsely populated localities in NSW.
Yerranderie falls under postcode 2787 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Wollondilly electorate.
