About York Town
York Town is a small rural locality in northern Tasmania, situated approximately 7 kilometres north-west of Beaconsfield within the West Tamar Council and Latrobe Council area. Covering around 22 square kilometres along the west bank of the Tamar River estuary, the locality had a 2021 Census population of 78 residents and is of profound historical significance as the site of the first British settlement attempt in northern Tasmania in 1804. The settlement — established under Lieutenant-Colonel William Paterson — is recognised as the fifth-oldest European settlement in Australia.
The York Town Historic Site preserves the landscape of the original 1804 settlement, which grew to include barracks, a storehouse, hospital, and weatherboard houses before being abandoned in favour of the site now occupied by Launceston in 1808. Today, the locality is a quiet rural and semi-rural area within easy reach of the Tamar Valley's scenic river scenery, orchards, and vineyards. The town of Beaconsfield offers local services, while Launceston is approximately 45 kilometres south and accessible via bus services operated by Manion's Coaches from nearby Beauty Point.
York Town falls under postcode 7270 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Braddon (Mersey) electorate.
