About Albury

Albury is a major regional city on the Murray River in southern New South Wales, situated 554 kilometres from Sydney and 326 kilometres from Melbourne on the Hume Highway. With an urban population of approximately 53,677 (2021 Census), it forms the NSW half of the Albury-Wodonga twin-city region, which together has nearly 98,000 residents. Originally a Wiradjuri Nation territory known as Bungambrawatha, Albury was established in 1839 and proclaimed a city in 1946. The city is a major transport and commercial hub serving the broader Murray region, with a diverse economy spanning health, education, manufacturing, and agriculture.

Albury offers an attractive lifestyle balancing city amenities with regional charm. Dean Street, the main commercial thoroughfare, features boutique shops, galleries, and dining options, while the Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) is a cultural highlight. Residents enjoy extensive parklands along the Murray River, including Noreuil Park and the Wonga Wetlands. Lake Hume, just 10 kilometres east, provides water sports and recreation. With affordable housing compared to capital cities, a modern airport, and strong schools and healthcare, Albury attracts families, retirees, and professionals seeking a tree-change lifestyle.

Albury falls under postcode 2640 and is governed by Albury Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Albury electorate.
