About Allendale
Allendale (also known historically as Allandale) is a small rural town in Victoria's Shire of Hepburn, situated north-east of Creswick and approximately 120 kilometres north-west of Melbourne. The town originated as a gold mining settlement around the Berry Leads mining area in the 19th century and had a population of 185 at the 2021 Census. Covering around 14 square kilometres, Allendale sits within the Ripon electoral district and is part of central Victoria's historic goldfields region.
Once a bustling mining town with hotels, a post office, bakery, and its own railway station on the North Creswick to Daylesford line, Allendale today is a quiet historic locality with most of its original services long since closed. Residents are a short drive from the larger towns of Creswick and Ballarat, where full amenities, schools, and employment are available. The surrounding landscape — a mix of old mining land, farmland, and native vegetation — gives Allendale a distinctive central Victorian character, and its proximity to Daylesford and Hepburn Springs offers access to the region's renowned spa and tourism scene.
Allendale falls under postcode 3364 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ripon (Western Victoria) electorate.
