About Allenstown
Allenstown is an established inner suburb of Rockhampton, located just 1.6 kilometres southwest of the Rockhampton CBD in Central Queensland. With a 2021 census population of 2,762 residents, it is one of the larger suburbs in the Rockhampton Region, covering 2.2 square kilometres at an elevation of 13 metres above sea level. The suburb was named after William Allen, a builder who sold land parcels following the Canoona gold rush around 1862, quickly establishing a residential community that became known locally as "Allen's town".
Allenstown Square is the suburb's main commercial hub, a neighbourhood shopping centre anchored by major supermarkets and specialty retailers after a significant 2012 refurbishment. The suburb has a diverse community with notable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representation — around 9.4% of residents. A median household income of ,147 per week and affordable rents (median 50/week) make it one of Rockhampton's more accessible inner suburbs for working families and singles. Rockhampton Cemetery, one of the region's oldest, is also located here.
Allenstown falls under postcode 4700 and is governed by Rockhampton Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Rockhampton electorate.
