About Alpha
Alpha is a small outback town and locality in the Barcaldine Region of Central Queensland, located approximately 438 kilometres west of Rockhampton and 999 kilometres north-west of Brisbane. It sits along the Capricorn Highway in the heart of Queensland's central-western pastoral country, serving as a service and rest stop for travellers and the surrounding cattle grazing stations. With a population of 559 residents spread across an enormous 12,669 square kilometre locality, Alpha is one of the more remote communities in regional Queensland.
Alpha's town centre includes essential services to support its pastoral community, including a hotel, roadhouse, school, and basic retail. The town is well known to outback travellers as a key stop on the Capricorn Highway between Rockhampton and Longreach. The surrounding landscape is classic Queensland outback — vast Mitchell grass plains, large cattle stations, and wide open skies. Despite its remoteness, the community has a strong spirit, and the town holds a significant place in the history of Queensland's pastoral industry and outback culture.
