About Jericho
Jericho is a small outback town in Central Western Queensland, located on the Capricorn Highway approximately 100 kilometres east of Longreach and 700 kilometres west of Rockhampton, within the Barcaldine Regional Council area. Despite its vast statistical area of over 9,000 square kilometres, the township itself is tiny, with a population of around 229 people. Jericho sits on the edge of the Channel Country and Winton–Longreach corridor, where the land transitions from mulga scrub and Mitchell grass plains to open black-soil downs.
Jericho's economy and identity are rooted in the outback pastoral industry — sheep and cattle grazing have driven the district for over a century. The Capricorn Highway passes through the town, linking it to Longreach in the west and Emerald and Rockhampton to the east. Facilities in town are limited, with residents accessing more extensive services in Longreach or Barcaldine. Jericho holds quiet historical significance as one of the stopping points along the iconic central Queensland rail corridor, and the wider region offers authentic outback experiences for travellers passing through.
Jericho falls under postcode 4728 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Gregory electorate.
