About Ilfracombe
Ilfracombe is a small outback town in the Longreach Region of central-western Queensland, located approximately 27 kilometres east of Longreach and 660 kilometres west of Rockhampton. The town covers a vast locality of over 6,580 square kilometres of Mitchell grass downs, one of the most productive pastoral regions in Australia. Established in 1891, Ilfracombe grew around the Central Western Railway and the pastoral industry, and had a population of 310 at the 2021 census. It sits at an elevation of 214 metres on the vast inland plains.
Ilfracombe offers an authentic outback Queensland experience, centred on the pastoral industry and a tight-knit community of around 300 people. The town is home to the famous Ilfracombe Machinery Museum, featuring an impressive collection of heritage farm equipment dating back decades. The Capricorn Highway passes through the town, connecting it to Longreach in the west and Barcaldine to the east. Residents enjoy a peaceful rural lifestyle where the pace is slow, the skies are vast, and community spirit runs deep in true outback fashion.
