About Alyangula
Alyangula is a remote mining township located on Groote Eylandt, a large island in the Gulf of Carpentaria approximately 650 kilometres east of Darwin in the Northern Territory. The town was purpose-built by GEMCO (Groote Eylandt Mining Company, a South32 subsidiary) to house workers at one of the world's largest manganese ore mines. With a population of around 751 people recorded in the 2021 Census, Alyangula is a compact, self-contained community almost exclusively made up of GEMCO employees and their families, with a predominantly non-Indigenous population.
Life in Alyangula revolves around the mining operation and the unique experience of island living in Australia's tropical Top End. The township features modern housing, a supermarket, sporting clubs, a golf course, swimming pools, and community facilities provided by GEMCO and local services. The surrounding Groote Eylandt is home to the Anindilyakwa people, the Traditional Owners of the land and sea country, and the island offers stunning beaches, fishing, and wildlife. Access to Alyangula is via Groote Eylandt Airport with regular flights to Darwin, making it a fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) hub as well as a place of longer-term residency for mining families.
Alyangula falls under postcode 885 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Arnhem electorate.
