About Arcoona
Arcoona is a vast, remote outback locality in South Australia, situated approximately 28 kilometres north-east of Woomera and around 434 kilometres north-west of Adelaide. Falling under the Outback Communities Authority, it covers an enormous area of over 6,823 square kilometres — originally established as Arcoona Station, a pastoral sheep station founded prior to 1880. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 82 residents, predominantly male (68 men, 18 women), reflecting the area's pastoral workforce character.
The landscape of Arcoona is defined by arid outback plains, salt lakes, and sparse scrubland typical of the far north of South Australia. Island Lagoon, a large salt lake, lies within the locality and offers striking views from its lookout. Neighbouring properties include Wirraminna to the south and Andamooka Station to the north. The locality was formally gazetted in April 2013 and remains one of the most sparsely populated areas in South Australia. There are no shops, schools, or public services within Arcoona; Woomera is the nearest settlement for essential supplies and facilities.
Arcoona falls under postcode 5720 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Giles electorate.
