About Woomera
Woomera is a remote defence township in the Far North region of South Australia, situated approximately 446 kilometres north of Adelaide on Commonwealth-owned land within the Woomera Prohibited Area. Established in 1947 to support the Royal Australian Air Force's weapons and aerospace testing operations, the locality sits within the RAAF Woomera Range Complex — one of the largest land-based testing ranges in the world. With a 2021 Census population of 132, Woomera is a small, closely managed community operating under the auspices of the Australian Defence Force.
The locality is home to the RAAF Woomera Heritage Centre and Missile Park, which showcases the remarkable history of Australian and allied rocket, missile, and satellite testing conducted here from the Cold War era onwards. Despite its remote setting in a stark arid landscape, Woomera functions as a self-contained community with essential services for residents and visiting defence personnel. The surrounding outback terrain, wide skies, and extraordinary scientific heritage make it one of Australia's most unique and historically significant localities.
Woomera falls under postcode 5720 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Giles electorate.
