About Atitjere
Atitjere (also known as Engawala) is a remote Aboriginal community in the Central Desert region of the Northern Territory, located approximately 180 kilometres north of Alice Springs within the Central Desert Regional Council local government area. The community covers a small area of around 7 square kilometres in the arid landscape of Central Australia, set amid the open spinifex plains and mulga scrub of the NT interior. It forms part of the broader Akityarre ward, which encompasses several remote communities across a vast area of the territory.
The community is primarily serviced by the Central Desert Regional Council, which provides essential services including local governance, infrastructure, and community support across this remote region of the Northern Territory. The surrounding landscape is characteristic of Central Australia, with red-earth country, sparse native vegetation, and a stark, expansive beauty typical of the outback interior. There is no public transport to or from Atitjere; access is via unsealed outback roads and a private four-wheel-drive vehicle, with Alice Springs serving as the nearest major centre for comprehensive services.
Atitjere falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Namatjira electorate.
