About Avonside
Avonside is a small rural locality in the Snowy Monaro Regional Council area of New South Wales, situated in the elevated pastoral country between Berridale and Dalgety at the edge of the Snowy Mountains region. The locality covers 57.4 square kilometres and recorded a population of 157 at the 2021 census, comprising farming families and rural-residential residents on the Monaro Tablelands in the Eden-Monaro federal division. The area sits within the elevated tablelands between the Snowy River headwaters and the main Monaro plains, enjoying views across sweeping grassland and snow gum woodland typical of the alpine fringe at altitudes above 800 metres. The Monaro's characteristic cold winters with regular snowfall, warm summers and exceptional clarity of light give Avonside and its surroundings a distinctive high-country atmosphere.
Avonside's residents enjoy the clean alpine air and expansive scenery of the Monaro Tablelands, with the historic riverside village of Dalgety (approximately 10–15 km east) and the ski resort town of Jindabyne (approximately 30 km north-west) providing local services and character. Cooma (approximately 50 km north) is the Monaro's regional hub, offering supermarkets, hospital, schools and Translink coach connections to Canberra. The Snowy Mountains ski resorts of Perisher and Thredbo are within an hour's drive, and the Snowy River — one of Australia's most iconic waterways — flows through the wider district. The Kosciuszko National Park's wilderness areas, trout streams and alpine walking trails are among the most spectacular in eastern Australia and define recreational life in the Snowy Mountains hinterland.
Avonside falls under postcode 2628 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Monaro electorate.
