About Bald Hills
Bald Hills is a rural locality in central Victoria, situated approximately 107 kilometres west-north-west of Melbourne, 14 kilometres north of Ballarat, and 3 kilometres west of Creswick. The locality straddles the local government areas of the City of Ballarat and Hepburn Shire, and had a population of 114 at the 2021 Census across around 11 square kilometres. The area sits at approximately 442 metres above sea level in a landscape defined by the rounded volcanic hills that give the locality its distinctive name.
The terrain is dominated by a cluster of rounded, largely treeless volcanic mounds — including Mount Blowhard, Mount Pisgah, Mount Hollowback, and Mount Cavern — described by early settlers as 'bald hills' for their sparse vegetation. The area has gold-rush era heritage; it once supported a railway station on the Ballarat–Creswick–Maryborough line as well as several hotels, none of which remain. Today, Creswick is the nearest town for local services, while Ballarat provides a full range of shops, schools, hospitals, and regional transport connections.
Bald Hills falls under postcode 3364 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ripon (Western Victoria) electorate.
