About Bancroft
Bancroft is a rural locality in the North Burnett Region of Queensland, located approximately 80 kilometres south-west of Bundaberg and 400 kilometres north-west of Brisbane. Named in 1929 after Dr Thomas Lane Bancroft, a doctor and scientist who lived in the district from 1910 to 1930, the locality covers 216 square kilometres. With a population of 98 at the 2021 Census, it is a small and sparsely settled agricultural community with a postcode area median taxable income of $34,390.
The landscape around Bancroft consists of undulating grazing country and bushland typical of the inland Burnett region. The locality has historical ties to the Gladstone to Monto railway, with a provisional school having operated here during the rail construction era in the 1920s. Bancroft has no shops, schools, or services today; residents travel to nearby towns such as Monto or Gin Gin for daily needs. The quiet, open character of the area appeals to those in primary production who value affordable land and a peaceful rural lifestyle.
Bancroft falls under postcode 4630 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Callide electorate.
