About Bearii
Bearii (pronounced BEER-eye) is a small town in Victoria's Shire of Moira, situated 252 kilometres north of Melbourne and approximately 63 kilometres north of Shepparton in the northern Goulburn Valley. The town lies just south of the Barmah National Park — one of the world's largest river red gum forests — and about 16 kilometres west of Strathmerton near the Murray River floodplain. The 2016 Census recorded a population of 145 residents, reflecting a modestly growing rural community that has maintained a presence in the area since the township was surveyed around 1875.
Bearii was named by an early settler, Mr Stein, after a place bearing the same name in Germany, and it developed as a small service node for the surrounding irrigation and grazing districts. The proximity to the magnificent Barmah National Park and the Murray River corridor makes the area popular with campers, canoeists, and bird-watchers who come to experience the iconic river red gum forests and seasonal floodplains. The town retains a heritage general store building and serves the local farming community, while the broader Moira Shire lifestyle of Shepparton, Nathalia, and Strathmerton is within comfortable reach for services and amenities.
Bearii falls under postcode 3641 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Shepparton (Northern Victoria) electorate.
