About Picola
Picola is a small rural town in the Shire of Moira in northern Victoria, situated approximately 246 kilometres north of Melbourne, 14 kilometres north of Nathalia, and 56 kilometres north of Shepparton. The town covers a notably large area of 250 square kilometres of flat, fertile Riverina country and had a population of 206 at the 2021 Census. Picola falls under the Moira Shire Council and is part of the broader Shepparton Region. The name Picola is thought to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning either rushing water or an Aboriginal sub-group associated with the area.
Picola is a quiet agricultural town at the heart of Victoria's northern Riverina, surrounded by farming properties engaged in irrigation, grain growing, and sheep and cattle grazing. The town has a post office, the historic Picola Hotel, and a community hall, with residents travelling to Nathalia and Shepparton for more comprehensive shopping, schooling, and services. The Barmah National Park and Barmah Lakes — one of the world's largest river red gum forests — lie to the north-west, offering fishing, camping, and canoeing along the Murray River. Picola suits those seeking an affordable, peaceful lifestyle in the Murray-Darling Basin farming heartland.
Picola falls under postcode 3639 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Shepparton (Northern Victoria) electorate.
