About Belyuen
Belyuen is a small Aboriginal community located on the Cox Peninsula in the Northern Territory, approximately 17 kilometres south-west of Darwin across Darwin Harbour. Formerly known as Delissaville, the community was renamed in 1975 to Belyuen — the name of a nearby waterhole significant to the local Larrakia and Belyuen peoples. With a population of 149 residents according to the 2021 Census, it is governed by the Belyuen Community Council and classified as an Aboriginal community rather than a standard locality under NT Government definitions.
The community sits within a low-lying tropical landscape on the Cox Peninsula, surrounded by monsoon forest and tidal flats, and experiences a classic Top End climate with warm temperatures year-round and a distinct wet season. Access to Belyuen from Darwin is via a short ferry crossing or a longer road route through the Arnhem Highway. Services are limited, and residents rely on Darwin for most major shopping, health, and education needs. The community has a strong connection to the land and sea country of the Cox Peninsula, with traditional fishing and gathering remaining part of local life.
Belyuen falls under postcode 822 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Spillett electorate.
