About Angurugu
Angurugu is an Indigenous community located on the western coast of Groote Eylandt, an island in the Gulf of Carpentaria approximately 650 kilometres east of Darwin and 50 kilometres offshore from Arnhem Land. With a population of around 883 people — approximately 95% of whom are Aboriginal — Angurugu is one of the three principal communities on the Groote Eylandt archipelago, alongside Umbakumba and Milyakburra. The community falls within the East Arnhem Region and was originally established as a Church Mission Society (CMS) mission site.
The community of Angurugu is deeply connected to its Anindilyakwa cultural heritage, with the Groote Eylandt archipelago designated as an Indigenous Protected Area since 2006. Residents have access to a health clinic, school, and basic community services, while the broader island is home to significant manganese mining operations run by South32's GEMCO mine. The area offers a remote, culturally rich lifestyle surrounded by stunning tropical coastline, rich marine life, and vast bushland. Connection to Darwin is maintained via regular charter and commercial flights through Groote Eylandt Airport.
Angurugu falls under postcode 822 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Spillett electorate.
