About Milyakburra
Milyakburra is a remote Aboriginal community located on the central eastern section of Bickerton Island in the Northern Territory, situated approximately 620 kilometres east-south-east of Darwin within the East Arnhem Regional Council area. The island lies roughly 8 kilometres east of the mainland, positioned between Groote Eylandt and Blue Mud Bay. With a 2021 Census population of 106 residents, the community is one of the smallest and most geographically isolated inhabited localities in Australia, governed under the Anindilyakwa Ward.
Access to Milyakburra is primarily by light aircraft via the community's sealed all-weather airstrip, which sits within five minutes' walk of the settlement. A fortnightly freight barge service from Darwin provides essential supplies to South Bay, and the community is approximately one hour by boat from Alyangula on Groote Eylandt. Milyakburra has no sealed roads and limited services, but it offers residents a deeply connected relationship with Country, rich in Anindilyakwa culture, language, and traditional land management practices.
Milyakburra falls under postcode 822 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Spillett electorate.
