About Gunyangara

Gunyangara (also known as Marngarr or Ski Beach) is a small Aboriginal community located on the Drimmie Peninsula, forming part of Melville Bay on the Gove Peninsula in the Northern Territory, approximately 13 kilometres west of Nhulunbuy CBD. The community sits on Gumatj land belonging to the Yunupingu, Burarrwanga, and Munungirritj clan groups of north-east Arnhem Land, within the East Arnhem Regional Council area. With a population of 241 residents across just 2.9 square kilometres, Gunyangara is a compact and culturally rich community where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make up approximately 87 per cent of the population.

Gunyangara was established in the late 1970s and early 1980s by Yunupingu family members who sought to reconnect Gumatj people with their traditional lands so that children could be raised in their language, culture, songs, and stories. The community is home to twelve different clan groups from the Miwatj region, speaking languages including Gumatj, Dhuwaya, Galpu, and Djapu — all dialects of Yolngu Matha. Residents are served by a small community store, a childcare centre, a Gumatj coffee shop, a health clinic, and a range of education and support services provided by local and government organisations. The surrounding Arnhem Land environment offers rich biodiversity, coastal scenery, and deep cultural significance.

Gunyangara falls under postcode 880 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mulka electorate.
