About Yirrkala
Yirrkala is a Yolngu Aboriginal community located on the Gove Peninsula in North-East Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, approximately 700 kilometres east of Darwin and 15 kilometres from the mining town of Nhulunbuy. With a population of around 657 residents, Yirrkala is one of the most culturally significant Indigenous communities in Australia, having been established as a mission in the 1930s and later becoming central to the landmark Yirrkala Church Panels and the first petition by Aboriginal Australians to the Australian Parliament in 1963.
Yirrkala is home to the Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre, one of Australia's largest and most acclaimed Indigenous art centres, representing over 300 Yolngu artists working in bark painting, sculpture, and traditional media. The community has a strong cultural identity rooted in Yolngu Matha language and traditions, and is widely respected for its contribution to Australian art and land rights history. Nhulunbuy provides access to essential services, schools, and a regional airport with connections to Darwin, while Yirrkala itself maintains a vibrant community school and health clinic.
Yirrkala falls under postcode 880 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mulka electorate.
