About Bethany
Bethany is a small historic village in the Barossa Council area of South Australia, located approximately 2 kilometres south-east of Tanunda in the heart of the Barossa Valley. Established in 1842 by Lutheran settlers from Silesia and originally known as Bethanien, it is one of the oldest European settlements in the Barossa and retains a strong sense of its German heritage. With a 2021 Census population of 146 residents and an area of under 10 square kilometres, Bethany is an intimate rural locality set on the gently undulating foothills of the Barossa Range at an elevation of around 283 metres.
Bethany is best known for Bethany Wines, a boutique family winery operated by the Schrapel family whose roots in the locality stretch back generations, with a cellar door nestled in a historic bluestone quarry. The village sits within one of Australia's most celebrated wine regions, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and pastoral countryside. Day-trippers and wine lovers frequently pass through, while Tanunda — just minutes away — offers cafes, restaurants, galleries, and a strong community calendar. Bethany's charm lies in its tranquil heritage character, scenic valley views, and proximity to the full Barossa Valley experience.
Bethany falls under postcode 5352 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Schubert electorate.
