About Betley
Betley is a small rural locality on the Bet Bet Creek in Victoria's Central Goldfields Shire, approximately 9 kilometres south-east of Dunolly and 140 kilometres north-west of Melbourne. With a population of 101 residents across just 10 square kilometres, it is a compact farming community with roots in the Victorian gold rush era. Originally known as Middle Bridge, the locality was renamed Betley in 1910.
In the early 1900s, gold discoveries at nearby Middle Creek attracted several mines and a thriving school community, though mining activity lasted only about a decade. Today Betley is a quiet, pastoral locality surrounded by open farmland and bushland along the Bet Bet Creek corridor. Residents access shops, schools, and services in Dunolly (9 km) and the larger regional centre of Maryborough (approximately 23 km), which is connected by V/Line bus services.
Betley falls under postcode 3472 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ripon (Western Victoria) electorate.
