About Eddington
Eddington is a small rural locality situated on the Loddon River, approximately 130 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and 48 kilometres south-west of Bendigo, within the Shire of Loddon and partly the Shire of Mount Alexander. With a 2021 Census population of 113 residents across 80 square kilometres, the locality is a quiet remnant of a once-bustling goldfields town that thrived during Victoria's gold rush era in the second half of the 19th century. Today it retains a peaceful, agricultural character typical of central Victoria's river country.
During the 19th century, Eddington supported a brewery, cheese and butter factories, several hotels, a racecourse, and churches — a legacy of the goldfields prosperity that briefly defined the region. Today, residents enjoy a slower pace with the Eddington Golf Club, a Community Centre, and a live steam model engineering club providing local social activity. The Loddon River bridge, built between 1928 and 1930, remains a local landmark. Nearby Dunolly, 13 kilometres to the south-east, provides essential services, while Bendigo is the nearest major regional city for more comprehensive needs.
Eddington falls under postcode 3472 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ripon (Western Victoria) electorate.
