About Binnaway
Binnaway is a small country town on the Castlereagh River in the Warrumbungle Shire of north-western New South Wales, located approximately 500 kilometres north-west of Sydney and about 35 kilometres south of Coonabarabran. Home to around 658 residents at the 2021 Census, the town sits on the traditional lands of the Kamilaroi (Gamilaraay) people and serves as a local service centre for surrounding farming and grazing properties across a vast locality of nearly 891 square kilometres. Binnaway has a strong agricultural identity, with wheat, canola, and livestock farming underpinning the local economy.
Binnaway is a tight-knit outback community with a genuine country character — it has a pub (the Royal Hotel), a primary school, a general store, and the communal spirit characteristic of small Australian towns. The spectacular Warrumbungle National Park, accessible about 35 kilometres to the north via Coonabarabran, offers world-class dark-sky stargazing, dramatic volcanic rock formations, and excellent hiking. The Castlereagh River corridor provides pleasant riverside picnic spots along the road to Coonabarabran. Binnaway suits those drawn to affordable rural living, a slower pace of life, and the wide-open landscapes of outback New South Wales.
Binnaway falls under postcode 2395 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Barwon electorate.
