About Tambar Springs
Tambar Springs is a small historic town in the North West Slopes region of New South Wales, situated approximately 417 kilometres north-west of Sydney within the Gunnedah Shire Council area. Set on the Liverpool Plains, the town covers a vast locality of nearly 993 square kilometres of largely flat agricultural land, with a 2021 Census population of 273. The area was opened for grazing in the 1830s, with closer settlement commencing in 1868 and the village formally proclaimed in 1888.
Tambar Springs holds an important place in Australian history as the site of what is believed to be the first World War I memorial erected in New South Wales, built in December 1918. The local economy is anchored by broadacre farming across the fertile Liverpool Plains, one of Australia's most productive agricultural regions. Gunnedah, approximately 67 kilometres to the north-east, provides the nearest comprehensive services including schools, hospitals, supermarkets, and transport connections. The town has a genuine frontier character, appealing to those who value quiet rural life and deep community ties.
Tambar Springs falls under postcode 2381 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Tamworth electorate.
