About Binya
Binya is a small farming community in the Riverina region of central New South Wales, located approximately 30 kilometres east of Griffith along the Burley Griffin Way within the Narrandera Shire council area. At the 2021 Census, Binya had a population of 122 residents spread across a large locality of nearly 700 square kilometres, typical of the flat, irrigated and dryland farming country of the Murrumbidgee irrigation area. The locality lies around 543 kilometres west of Sydney, making it a genuinely remote rural settlement in central NSW.
Agriculture defines the character of Binya, with the surrounding district supporting irrigated crops, cereal farming, and grazing in the heart of the Riverina's productive farming belt. The Temora–Roto railway line passes through Binya — historically connecting it to the broader region — and while passenger services ceased in 1983, goods trains continue to use the line today. A general store and post office serve the immediate community, while Griffith to the west provides the nearest range of shops, schools, health services, and the services of a prosperous regional city built around irrigated agriculture.
Binya falls under postcode 2665 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Murray electorate.
