About Bolong
Bolong is a small rural locality in the City of Shoalhaven on the South Coast of New South Wales, situated on the northern bank of the Shoalhaven River between Bomaderry and Shoalhaven Heads. With a population of 94 at the 2021 Census, the locality covers approximately 16 square kilometres of flat, fertile river floodplain. The name Bolong is an Aboriginal word meaning 'bullock', reflecting the area's long association with cattle and dairy farming.
Bolong has a rich local history — it had its own public school from 1861 to 1963, originally known as Boolong Public School. The locality remains a quiet dairy farming community, with lush green pastures along the Shoalhaven River and Broughton Creek. Residents rely on nearby Bomaderry and Nowra for shops, schools, and services, which are just a short drive away. The area's riverside setting and proximity to the Shoalhaven coast make it a peaceful rural retreat within reach of regional amenities.
