About Bool Lagoon
Bool Lagoon is a rural locality in the Naracoorte Lucindale Council area of South Australia's Limestone Coast region, situated approximately 24 kilometres south of Naracoorte. The area is dominated by Bool Lagoon Game Reserve and Hacks Lagoon Conservation Park — collectively one of the largest and most ecologically significant freshwater wetland systems in southern Australia. Recognised as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, the lagoons provide critical habitat for waterbirds, including ibis, spoonbills, and many rare and endangered species. The 2021 census recorded fewer than 50 residents in the broader locality.
Bool Lagoon draws birdwatchers, nature lovers, and ecotourists from across Australia and internationally, particularly during winter when the lagoons are full and bird activity peaks. The surrounding country is agricultural, with sheep and cattle grazing on properties bordering the reserve. Naracoorte — home to supermarkets, schools, and the famous Naracoorte Caves — provides all urban services within a short drive. The locality suits those seeking a deeply rural lifestyle with extraordinary wildlife on the doorstep.
Bool Lagoon falls under postcode 5271 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mackillop electorate.
