About Lochaber
Lochaber is a rural locality in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia, within the Naracoorte Lucindale Council local government area. Spanning nearly 339 square kilometres, the locality is very sparsely settled, with a 2021 Census population of 122 residents. The area takes its name from the Scottish Highland region, reflecting the heritage of early European settlers who established pastoral runs across this fertile corner of South Australia in the 19th century.
The Limestone Coast is celebrated for its productive agricultural land, world-class viticulture, and natural attractions including caves and wetlands, and Lochaber sits within this impressive pastoral region. Naracoorte, the council headquarters, is the nearest service centre offering schools, shops, and health services. Residents enjoy a quiet rural lifestyle surrounded by rolling grazing country, with reasonable proximity to the renowned Coonawarra wine region and the South Australian–Victorian border.
Lochaber falls under postcode 5271 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mackillop electorate.
