About Booligal
Booligal is a remote village in the Riverina region of western New South Wales, situated on the banks of the Lachlan River approximately 78 kilometres north of Hay via the Cobb Highway. Located about 802 kilometres west of Sydney, the locality covers a vast 4,519 square kilometres of open grassland and saltbush plain. With a population of 98 at the 2021 Census and a median taxable income of $43,039, it remains a small pastoral community centred on sheep and cattle grazing.
Booligal was immortalised by Banjo Paterson in his poem 'Hay and Hell and Booligal' and has a rich history as a Cobb & Co staging post, with the township first gazetted in 1860. The Booligal Hotel continues to serve travellers with meals, accommodation, and a postal agency, while the annual Booligal Sheep Races draw crowds from across the region. The surrounding landscape of river red gums, open plains, and grazing kangaroos gives the village a distinctly Australian outback character.
Booligal falls under postcode 2711 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Murray electorate.
