About One Tree
One Tree is a remote outback locality in the Hay Shire of the NSW Riverina, situated approximately 38 kilometres south-east of Hay and 39 kilometres west of Booligal on the vast Mitchell grass plains. Covering an extraordinary 1,629 square kilometres of flat, arid river country, the locality had a population of just 22 at the 2021 census. Established as a pastoral locality in 1862, One Tree is named for a lone tree that once served as a landmark in this near-featureless landscape. It falls within the federal electorate of Farrer and the NSW state electorate of Murray.
Life in One Tree centres on large-scale sheep and cattle grazing on the classic Riverina plains. The One Tree Hotel is a landmark of outback hospitality in this isolated region. Residents travel to Hay (approximately 40 minutes by car) for all essential services including shopping, schools and medical care. The locality embodies the character of outback NSW — vast, flat, and deeply connected to the pastoral traditions of the Riverina. It appeals only to those with a strong affinity for remote rural living, and is surrounded by one of Australia's most important merino wool-producing districts.
One Tree falls under postcode 2711 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Murray electorate.
