About Booubyjan
Booubyjan is a rural locality in the Gympie Region of Queensland, situated approximately 250 kilometres north-west of Brisbane along the Burnett Highway. Covering over 500 square kilometres, it is one of the larger localities in the region by area, yet had a population of just 98 at the 2021 Census. The area has deep pastoral roots dating back to 1847, when brothers Paul and Clement Lawless established one of the earliest pastoral runs in the Burnett River district.
Booubyjan is home to the heritage-listed Booubyjan Homestead, a complex of nineteenth-century timber buildings constructed by the Lawless family using traditional drop-slab and vertical-slab techniques. Listed on the Queensland Heritage Register since 1992, the homestead operates as a museum and provides rare evidence of early colonial construction in rural Queensland. The landscape is characterised by open grazing country along the Burnett Highway, and the locality has no shops or services — residents travel to Goomeri or Murgon for daily needs. The name Booubyjan is believed to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning 'turn back'.
Booubyjan falls under postcode 4601 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Nanango electorate.
