About Bowes
Bowes is a remote rural locality in the Mid West region of Western Australia, situated within the Shire of Northampton approximately 70 kilometres north of Geraldton. With a population of 104 at the 2021 Census, it covers a vast area of over 222 square kilometres of semi-arid pastoral land. The locality takes its name from the Bowes River, which was named by explorer George Grey in 1839 after Mary Bowes, Dowager Countess of Strathmore.
The landscape is characterised by sparse scrubland and open grazing country typical of Western Australia's Mid West. The North West Coastal Highway passes through the area, providing the main road link between Geraldton to the south and Northampton to the north. Residents rely on the nearby town of Northampton and the city of Geraldton for shopping, schools, medical services and other amenities. The broader region offers access to the stunning Kalbarri National Park and the wildflower country that draws visitors each spring.
Bowes falls under postcode 6535 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Moore (Agricultural) electorate.
