About Northampton
Northampton is a historic country town in Western Australia's Mid West region, situated approximately 480 kilometres north-west of Perth and 52 kilometres north of Geraldton, within the Shire of Northampton. With a population of 830, the town was established in 1864 and carries a rich heritage rooted in its early copper mining origins, centred in the Nokanena Brook valley. The town sits along the North West Coastal Highway, covering an area of nearly 12 square kilometres, and is home to a National Trust–listed historic building along its heritage Hampton Street precinct.
Northampton serves as a regional service centre for surrounding pastoral and agricultural communities, with local shops, schools, and essential services that support both residents and highway travellers heading north towards Kalbarri and the Pilbara. The historic streetscape of Hampton Street features well-preserved colonial-era architecture that reflects the town's origins and draws visitors with an interest in WA history. With a warm climate and a quiet rural pace, Northampton suits those seeking an authentic outback town lifestyle within the broader Geraldton region.
Northampton falls under postcode 6535 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Moore (Agricultural) electorate.
