The locality covers 273.9 square kilometres of agricultural and brigalow scrub country and recorded a population of 181 at the 2021 census. The town takes its name from the brigalow (Acacia harpophylla), a distinctive thorny acacia tree species that dominated the natural vegetation of the Queensland brigalow belt before extensive clearing for agriculture. Brigalow's Callide state electorate and Maranoa federal electorate reflect the locality's position in Queensland's broad Western Downs agricultural and coal seam gas region.
Brigalow is a quiet agricultural service point with a general store that has served the surrounding farming community for generations, amid country characterised by broadacre wheat, sorghum and cotton farming as well as cattle grazing. The nearby town of Chinchilla (20 km north-west) provides the main service hub for the district, including supermarkets, schools, a hospital and community facilities. The Western Downs region has seen significant economic activity from coal seam gas development, providing employment and infrastructure that has boosted surrounding towns. Toowoomba (144 km south-east) and Brisbane (272 km) are accessible for specialist services, with the Warrego Highway providing the main transport corridor.
Brigalow falls under postcode 4412 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Callide electorate.
