About Brooker
Brooker is a large, sparsely populated rural locality on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula, sitting within the District Council of Tumby Bay approximately 38 kilometres north-west of Tumby Bay and around 266 kilometres west of Adelaide by road. With a land area of over 381 square kilometres, Brooker is one of the more expansive localities in the region, its vast pastoral and agricultural paddocks shaped by the hundred of the same name proclaimed in the late 19th century. The 2021 Census counted 90 residents across 28 dwellings — a very low density even by Eyre Peninsula standards — with the community centred on dryland farming and grazing.
Brooker's landscape is dominated by broad expanses of cereal cropping and livestock grazing, typical of the productive but sparsely settled agricultural belt of the northern Eyre Peninsula. The locality is deeply rural, with no local shops or services — residents depend on Tumby Bay for a supermarket, school, and community facilities, while Port Lincoln, the regional centre approximately 60 kilometres to the south, provides hospitals, secondary schools, and broader retail. The Eyre Peninsula's stunning coastline and marine park areas are within driving distance, offering excellent fishing, diving, and coastal recreation that draw visitors to the region.
Brooker falls under postcode 5607 and is governed by Tumby Bay Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Flinders electorate.
