About Brookstead
Brookstead is a small rural town and locality in the Toowoomba Region of Queensland, situated along the Gore Highway in the heart of the Darling Downs agricultural plain, approximately 60 kilometres south-west of Toowoomba and 192 kilometres west of Brisbane. With a population of 182 according to the 2021 Census, the locality covers a large area of 150.7 square kilometres and is centred on a farming community with very low population density. The North Branch of the Condamine River forms the western boundary of the locality, supporting the surrounding mixed farming and grazing properties.
The Darling Downs is one of Queensland's most productive agricultural regions, and Brookstead reflects this character with its grain silos and broad-acre cropping farms being defining features of the landscape. The town has a quiet, self-contained feel typical of small Darling Downs communities, with residents relying on nearby Pittsworth (about 21 kilometres east) or Toowoomba for most services, shopping, and medical facilities. The Gore Highway provides the main connection through the locality, and the area is popular for road travellers heading west across the Darling Downs.
Brookstead falls under postcode 4364 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Condamine electorate.
