About Broomehill Village
Broomehill Village is a small historic rural locality in Western Australia's Great Southern region, situated approximately 280 kilometres south-east of Perth and about 18 kilometres east of Katanning. The compact township — covering just 8.3 square kilometres — was established following the completion of the Great Southern Railway in 1889, with the entire prior settlement of Eticup physically relocating to beside the railway line. With a 2021 Census population of 211 residents, it sits within the Broomehill-Tambellup Shire council area.
Broomehill Village carries genuine pioneering history: it was named after Sir Frederick Napier Broome, then Governor of Western Australia, and serves today as the recognised starting point of the historic Holland Track — a 700-kilometre goldfields route blazed by John Holland in 1893. The local area is characterised by grain farming and sheep grazing, typical of WA's wheatbelt-fringe agricultural landscape. Katanning serves as the nearest service town for schooling, shopping, and healthcare, while the broader Great Southern region offers access to the Stirling Ranges and Albany's stunning coastline.
Broomehill Village falls under postcode 6318 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Roe (Agricultural) electorate.
