About Bungil
Bungil is a sparsely populated rural locality in south-west Queensland, situated within the Maranoa Region approximately 6.5 kilometres south of Roma — the regional centre of the Maranoa. Covering 165 square kilometres of the Mitchell Grass Downs, the locality had a population of just 69 people at the 2021 Census and takes its name from Bungil Creek, which flows through the area. The landscape is characterised by flat to gently undulating cattle country, black soil plains, and the open pastoral scenery typical of outback Queensland.
Bungil is essentially a peri-urban rural locality on the southern fringes of Roma, with residents living on farming and grazing properties along Bungil Creek. Roma, just minutes north, provides all essential services including schools, supermarkets, a hospital, and the Roma Airport. The region is notable for Queensland's natural gas industry, with the Surat Basin gas fields nearby, and cattle grazing being the dominant agricultural activity across the broader Maranoa.
Bungil falls under postcode 4455 and is governed by Maranoa Region Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warrego electorate.
