About Burcher
Burcher is a small rural village in the Lachlan Shire of central New South Wales, located approximately 479 kilometres west of Sydney, 54 kilometres north of West Wyalong, and 65 kilometres south of Condobolin. With a population of around 185 recorded in the 2006 census, it is a classic example of a tight-knit inland agricultural community surrounded by vast pastoral and cropping land. The township sits within a flat, semi-arid landscape typical of the central-west wheat belt.
Despite its small size, Burcher offers the essentials of country life including two churches, a local hotel, a corner store, and sporting facilities such as a nine-hole golf course, cricket ground, and tennis courts. The nearby Lake Cowal is a significant draw, renowned for its exceptional birdlife diversity and as the site of the Lake Cowal Gold Mine. Burcher historically had a railway station on the Burcher branch line, though train services no longer operate in the area.
Burcher falls under postcode 2671 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Orange electorate.
