About Burnie

Burnie is a port city on the north-west coast of Tasmania, situated on the shores of Emu Bay approximately 325 kilometres north-west of Hobart and 47 kilometres west of Devonport. It is Tasmania's fourth largest city, founded in 1827 as Emu Bay and proclaimed a city in 1988. The city's economy has historically been driven by heavy manufacturing, mining, forestry, and a deep-water port that handles over five million tonnes of freight annually, including nearly half of Tasmania's containerised cargo. This suburb entry (postcode 7320) covers the inner city area administered by the City of Burnie.

Despite industrial roots, Burnie has reinvented itself as a creative and tourism hub with the award-winning Makers' Workshop gallery and café, a revitalised foreshore precinct, and easy access to the spectacular Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden. The city centre offers shopping, schools, a regional hospital, and a vibrant café culture. Residents enjoy a relaxed coastal lifestyle with the backdrop of rich farmland and forested ranges, and the Spirit of Tasmania ferry terminal at nearby Devonport provides a gateway to mainland Australia.

Burnie falls under postcode 7320 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Braddon (Murchison) electorate.
