About Cadell
Cadell is a peaceful rural township situated on the banks of the Murray River in South Australia's Riverland region, approximately 192 kilometres north-east of Adelaide within the Mid Murray Council area. The locality occupies the inside of a large southward bend in the Murray River, giving it a scenic riverside setting amid citrus orchards and wine grape vineyards characteristic of the Riverland. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 547, with a notably higher male population largely attributable to the presence of the Cadell Training Centre, a low-security correctional facility in the locality.
The Murray River provides a natural focal point for the community, with a free government-operated ferry service crossing the river and connecting Cadell to surrounding localities. Conservation parks flank the town, with the Morgan Conservation Park to the west and Hogwash Bend Conservation Park to the east offering natural bushland popular with birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Major services including medical, pharmacy, and retail are available in nearby Waikerie, making Cadell a quiet riverside community well suited to those seeking a relaxed, rural lifestyle along one of Australia's great waterways.
Cadell falls under postcode 5321 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Chaffey electorate.
