About Calingiri
Calingiri is a small wheat-belt town in the Shire of Victoria Plains, Western Australia, located approximately 143 kilometres north-north-east of Perth and 34 kilometres south-west of Wongan Hills. Gazetted in 1917 and named after a local waterhole first recorded by a surveyor in 1903, the town covers nearly 197 square kilometres of the Central Midlands wheat-belt and recorded a population of 198 at the 2021 Census. The local economy is anchored in grain farming, with a Cooperative Bulk Handling (CBH) grain receival site serving the surrounding agricultural district.
Calingiri is a quintessential Western Australian wheat-belt service town, supporting the farming families of its surrounding district through the agricultural seasons of wheat, canola, and grain production. The famous Benedictine monastery town of New Norcia — a National Heritage-listed community founded in 1846 — lies approximately 30 kilometres to the west and serves as a notable regional attraction for visitors and day-trippers from Perth. Moora, 66 kilometres to the north-west, provides the nearest full range of services including hospital, high school, and supermarket, while the Great Northern Highway offers a straightforward drive south to Perth for city services.
Calingiri falls under postcode 6569 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Moore (Agricultural) electorate.
