About Callide
Callide is a small rural locality in the Shire of Banana in Central Queensland, situated in the Callide Valley approximately 10 kilometres north-west of Biloela and around 120 kilometres inland from the port city of Gladstone. The locality covers approximately 69 square kilometres and falls under the Banana Shire Council. With a population of just 80 residents and a median household income of around $52,600, Callide is a sparsely populated area defined by its significant role in Queensland's coal and energy industry.
Callide is most notable as the site of one of Queensland's major coal mining and power generation complexes — the Callide Coal Mine, where government geologist William Rands first identified a substantial coal seam in 1891, and excavations began in 1944. The Callide Power Station, commissioned from 1965 onwards, was a landmark in Queensland's energy infrastructure. The land use is a mix of crop growing and grazing on native vegetation, with the Moura railway line passing through the locality. Residents access services and amenities in Biloela, the administrative centre of Banana Shire, a short drive to the south-east.
Callide falls under postcode 4715 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Callide electorate.
